Don't be afraid to add a bit of mixed media to your layouts. It is a nice way to add details.  And as that famous quote goes " “It’s attention to detail that makes the difference between average and stunning.”- Francis Atterbury

In my experience, most techniques are pretty forgiving.  If they weren't, I wouldn't be trying them.  If I can do it, you can do it.  And it does make a nice change of pace from the usual method of paper and pretties.
